Vol. 432 No. 2

Written Answers. - Legality of Nuclear Weapons.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

29 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has written to the International Court of Justice in the Hague to urge that nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction should be made illegal.

The World Court Project initiatives seeks international support to persuade the United Nations General Assembly to seek an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on the legality of nuclear weapons. As the Deputy will be aware, I met representatives of the project last January and officials of my Department have had further contacts with the Irish supporters of the initiative.

As I said in my reply to the Deputy's question of 11 March, I will consider very carefully Ireland's position when a draft resolution on the initiative is tabled at the United Nations later this year. Pending consideration of this matter at the UN General Assembly, I have not written to the International Court of Justice.
