Vol. 432 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Ivan Yates

Question:

130 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the representations in relation to a school transport problem for pupils attending a post-primary school (details supplied) in County Wexford; if she, or officials of her Department, will meet parents' representatives in this regard to try to get it finally resolved; and the proposals, if any, she has to improve the basic service for these pupils.

As I explained to the Deputy, last October, in relation to this question, individual vehicles are required to operate a number of services to schools and this often results in an early morning start or a longer wait in the evenings by pupils. In this case, the pupils who are collected first in the morning are returned home first in the evening.

The transport liaison officer who administers the post-primary school transport scheme locally, on my behalf, is at present in consultation with Bus Éireann and the school authorities to see if any improvement can be made in the service for the coming school year. I have asked for an urgent report on the outcome of these discussions and I would wish to consider this report before deciding whether a meeting with parents' representatives would be productive.
