Vol. 432 No. 3

Written Answers. - Howth Head (Dublin) Sewage Dump Site.

Ivor Callely

Question:

131 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine the studies, if any, that have been carried out since the relocation of the Howth Head sewerage dump site; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In March 1991, following extensive scientific studies, the authorised sewage sludge dumpsite was relocated from its previous location two miles off Howth Head to a new site south-east of the Kish Lighthouse about ten to fourteen miles offshore.

Follow-up studies — Benthic and Oceanographic — to assess the effects, if any, on the new dumpsite commenced in January of this year and were completed in May. From a preliminary assessment of these studies it would appear that the dumping has had no adverse effect on the marine environment. It is expected that a report will be available towards the end of the year.

The condition of the previous site since cessation of dumping was also examined. This would appear to be in a state of recovery.
