Vol. 432 No. 3

Written Answers. - EC Competition Directive.

Enda Kenny

Question:

157 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if Commission Directive 90/388/EEC on Competition refers to voice communication and transmission; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Commission Directive 90/388/EEC on competition in the markets for telecommunications services requires member states to withdraw all special or exclusive rights for the supply of telecommunications services other than voice telephony.

The directive defines "voice telephony" as "the commercial provision for the public of the direct transport and switching of speech in real time between public switched network termination points enabling any user to use equipment connected to such a network termination point in order to communicate with another termination point".
