161 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the total number of current prospecting licences; the minerals the licence holders have identified to explore; and the noticeable changes in mineral exploration that have taken place over recent years.
The total number of current prospecting licences is 459. The licences refer to the generality of minerals in all cases except for 76 restricted licences details of which are given in the following list.
Among the most noticeable changes in mineral exploration over recent years are: a revival of interest in exploration for base metals, zinc and lead, triggered by the discovery of the major deposits at Galmoy and Lisheen; a reduction in the overall number of prospecting licences held by exploration companies, reflecting industry consolidation and relatively low metal prices in the main international markets; increased use by exploration companies of sophisticated regional compilations of geology, borehole data and geochemistry in order to select promising target areas for exploration and increased attention by exploration companies to environmental issues and to communication with the public.
