Vol. 432 No. 3

Written Answers. - Wildlife Census.

Austin Deasy

Question:

44 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Finance if a census of the country's wildlife is carried out on a regular basis; and, if so, if there are any significant trends particularly where certain species, once regarded as quite common are now in danger of extinction.

No census of the country's wildlife is carried out on a regular basis. However, as indicated by my predecessor in reply to a similar question from the Deputy on 5 November 1992 (Dáil Debates Vol. 424 No. 10 Cols 2471/1), surveys targeted on specific wildlife areas have been undertaken in recent years. I have no doubt that similar surveys will be undertaken in the future.

If the Deputy can indicate an interest in any particular species, I will try to obtain any information which he may require.
