Vol. 432 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tax Relief for Fire Brigade Personnel.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

68 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance if he will exempt retained fire brigade personnel from paying tax on their fire brigade income from their local authority.

I would not be in favour of introducing additional tax reliefs or exemptions for a particular group of workers such as fire brigade personnel, not just because of the cost of such a move, but also because it would undoubtedly generate demands for similar treatment from other groups which would, in equity be very hard to resist. This would lead to a substantial loss of revenue to the Exchequer which simply could not be contemplated in current circumstances.
