Vol. 432 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dormant Bank Accounts.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

84 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance if the Central Bank has evaluated all dormant bank accounts; the totals involved; the purpose to which such accounts have been put; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that the Central Bank is discussing the whole area of dormant bank accounts with the representative bodies of the banks and I have asked them to keep my Department fully informed.

There is no accurate estimate at present of the number or size of "dormant" bank accounts. The amounts in these accounts remain on deposit until such time as a claim on the account is made.
