Question:

30 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of prosecutions that have been related to social welfare fraud; the number of convictions in each of the years from 1990 to 1992; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 19, 27 and 30 together.

The information requested is set out in a tabular statement which I will make available to the Deputies.

The drop in the number of prosecutions for 1991 and 1992 is due to the amnesty which was in force from 19 March 1991 to 13 December 1991. This amnesty was just one aspect of a wide-ranging control programme introduced in recent years which has resulted in significant improvements in the levels of PRSI receipts and in the prevention and control of social welfare abuses generally.
