Vol. 432 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

19 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Justice if she intends to increase the recruitment numbers of Gardaí; when additional recruitment will take place; the extent of this additional recruitment; the numbers recruited in each of the years from 1980 to date; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

33 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Justice if she has completed her assessment of the way in which she might accelerate the intake of Gardaí; and when she will recruit additional Gardaí.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 19 and 33 together. The recruitment of 1,000 gardaí is underway at present. The first batch of these entered the Garda College in April last year. I want to accelerate the rate of intake of these recruits and I will be submitting proposals to Government in the near future to provide for this. My plan is to increase the annual intake from 260 to up to 400 per year. The number of gardaí recruited in each of the years since 1980 is as follows:
