22 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Justice when she will announce proposals to implement the recommendation of the Inter-Departmental Committee on Urban Crime and Disorder which reported on 2 November 1992; her views on whether the report arose out of events in the Neilstown-Ronanstown area of Dublin in November 1991, and whether occurrences since then have emphasised the urgency of the situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
I hope to be in a position soon to make an announcement about the implementation of recommendations made by the inter-departmental group both in relation to the Ronanstown area of North Clondalkin and in relation to the problem of urban crime and disorder generally. The implementation of these recommendations will involve several Government Departments including my own Department and State agencies, as a consequence of the broadly-based approach to the problem of Urban Crime and Disorder, which was adopted by the Committee.
While I agree that the origin of the group's work arose from certain events that occurred in the Neilstown/Ronanstown area of Dublin around November 1991 the Group was asked to address the wider problem of crime and disorder in urban areas, on the assumption that the traditional police and law enforcement response — while obviously essential — would not provide a complete answer.
