Vol. 432 No. 5

Written Answers. - Prison Places.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

42 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice the total number of prison places required on 31 May 1993 if all sentences were being fully served; the number of prisoners serving sentence, under sentence, and on release for reasons other than completion of sentence on that day; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

There was a total of 2,166 prisoners in custody (including those held on remand) on 31 May last and at this figure the prison system was operating at or near full capacity. There were 652 offenders on temporary conditional release on that date.
