Vol. 432 No. 5

Written Answers. - Reform of Sentencing Policy.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

50 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Justice if, in regard to her statement made during a visit to Garda Headquarters on 4 March 1993, she has yet had any discussions with the Judiciary about reforming sentencing policy; if not, when it is intended that these discussions will take place; if she will give details of the format these discussions will take; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am not clear as to whether the Deputy is interested primarily in the question of sentencing policy or on arrangements I may have for general discussions with members of the judiciary.

As to the latter, the position is that the arrangements and format for such discussions is, in my view, a matter to be dealt with directly and privately with the judiciary.

As to the substantive issue of sentencing policy, I believe that I have made my position quite clear in reply to a Question by Deputy Gay Mitchell on 30 March. The Dáil debate reference is Vol. 428, cols. 1086-1090 of the Official Report.
