Vol. 432 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mobile Phone Thefts.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

63 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice the action, if any, she proposes to take to combat the growing trend of mobile phone thefts; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that while 1992 figures are not yet available the indications are that the theft of mobile phones has increased. The Garda authorities are very alert to the problem and all such thefts are fully investigated by them and all appropriate measures are taken to deal with the problem. The Garda authorities also consider that the role of the public in preventing this type of crime is as important as the measures taken by the Garda. In this respect the Garda use all available opportunities to advise the public on sensible crime prevention measures which they can take and they also actively encourage car owners to take more care in parking vehicles and ensuring that they are locked and made as secure as possible.
