Vol. 432 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

88 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education whether a person (details supplied) in County Kildare will continue to receive a special transport facility to St. Mochua's Special School, Clondalkin, County Dublin; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The boy in question resides 8.1 miles from Scoil Mochua and had been in receipt of special school transport since 1981. However, in recent times both the school authorities and Bus Éireann have indicated that transport on the special service is no longer possible because of difficulties in lifting the boy on and off the bus which operates the service. As an alternative to the school bus, my Department has offered an annual transport grant of £520 to his parents to assist towards the cost of private school transport arrangements to the school.
