Vol. 432 No. 6

Written Answers. - Junior Certificate Examination.

Máirín Quill

Question:

219 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that some of the material in the Geography paper in the Junior Certificate examination in 1993 went outside the scope of the prescribed curriculum for that examination; if she will make a statement on the matter.

Mary Harney

Question:

226 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Education if she has received complaints regarding the fact that some aspects of the Geography paper in the Junior Certificate examination of 1993 were not part of the prescribed curriculum; if this will be taken into account when this paper is being marked; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 219 and 226 together.

I am aware that there was some dissatisfaction expressed with the Geography Junior Certificate Higher Level Paper. I am advised that the paper did not contain any material outside of the prescribed syllabus. Complaints related, in the main, to the format of the paper, to the language used and to what was perceived as difficult level of questioning for children in this age group.

All complaints have been noted in the Department, will be discussed at the marking conference and will be taken into consideration, as appropriate, in the marking of the paper.
