Vol. 432 No. 6

Written Answers. - Shooting of Demonstrators in Mogadishu.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

84 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will be demanding that the UN hold a public inquiry into the shooting dead of demonstrators in Mogadishu to ensure that those responsible will be brought to justice.

I deplore and regret the loss of life that has occured in Mogadishu, particularly of women and children. I have already publicly called for the urgent restoration of calm and order there and had our concerns raised at very high level with UN Headquarters in New York. It is a matter of the utmost importance that these incidents be thoroughly investigated and that whatever measures may be called for are taken promptly by the UN. An inquiry is already underway and I have every confidence that it will be carried out in a fair and competent manner.
