Vol. 432 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Census of Population.

Tony Gregory

Question:

2 Mr. Gregory asked the Taoiseach if the complete breakdown of the last census statistics is now available to his Department.

The processing of the results of the 1991 Census of Population is being carried out in three phases.

The first phase involved the classification of the 1991 population by age, sex, marital status and household composition at the level of towns and district electoral divisions. These results were published in a series of local population reports on a county by county basis according as the data were finalised. A summary report for the State was published last April.

The second phase of the processing, which is nearing completion at present, covers the following topics: religion, the Irish language, usual residence and household characteristics. Results covering these topics will become available on a county by county basis during the remainder of 1993.

The final phase relates to means of travel, education, occupation and economic activity. Work on this phase is progressing at present and it is expected that results will become available in the first half of 1994.

In regard to the commitment in the Programme for a Partnership Government that as soon as the 1991 census figures are completed an electoral commission will be appointed to prepare proposals for the revision of Dáil constituencies——

That is a separate matter. The Deputy's question relates to census statistics and he is now raising new matter.

My question relates directly to the publication of the census statistics. I am asking the Minister if, on the publication of census statistics, an electoral commission will be appointed. That commission has not been appointed and I want to know why and when it will be appointed.

There is nothing about an electoral commission in the Deputy's question, it refers to the last census statistics. If the Deputy wishes to pursue the matter he should do so by way of a direct question.
