Vol. 432 No. 8

Written Answers. - Hospital Medical Files Request.

Bernard Allen

Question:

98 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork has been refused her son's medical files by the Cork Regional Hospital; and if he will intervene in this case to ensure that the hospital complies with the Charter of Patients' Rights.

In accordance with the provisions of the Charter of Rights for Hospital Patients, patients have a right to request a hospital to make details of their medical records available to them. As a general rule, a hospital or health board will meet patients' wishes in this regard.

I have made inquiries from the Cork Regional Hospital authorities about this case and I understand that the hospital has informed the person concerned that it will consider the matter on receipt of further details in writing.
