Vol. 433 No. 2

Written Answers. - Maastricht Treaty Compliance.

Phil Hogan

Question:

70 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for the Environment the initiatives, if any, he will be taking, legislative or otherwise, to comply with the terms of the Maastricht Treaty; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Apart from measures in the fields of environment and transport policy, and in relation to the Structural Funds (including the Cohesion Fund), two specific matters arise.

I will be submitting proposals to the Government at the appropriate time regarding the method of selecting Ireland's nine members on the EC Committee of the Regions which is provided for in the Treaty.

The Treaty provides that every European Community national will have the right to vote and be a candidate at local and European elections in the Member State of residence, subject to detailed arrangements to be adopted. I will be submitting implementation proposals to the Government in due course.
