The Government have taken steps to ensure that the British authorities are aware of the concerns which have been expressed, both here and in Britain, about this case. In this regard, I can confirm that the matter was raised by the Taoiseach during his recent meeting with the British Prime Minister. I have also raised the case with the British Foreign Secretary. While it would be inappropriate to enter into the detail of these exchanges, the Deputy can be assured that attention was drawn to the various aspects of this case about which particular disquiet has been expressed.
I availed of the opportunity of a meeting with the family of the person in question on 29 June to hear their concerns at first hand and to indicate that my Department would continue to monitor closely developments in this case and, through the Embassy, London, to render any assistance appropriate.
