Vol. 433 No. 5

Written Answers. - Ordnance Survey Maps.

Liz McManus

Question:

40 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Finance his views on whether the provision of ordnance survey maps has fallen far short of current needs; whether the fact that maps dating as far back as 1908 are still being used for reference and for registration purposes is a matter of concern; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A major review of the Ordnance Survey mapping programme was undertaken in 1989, as a result of which the then Minister for Finance instructed that the following programmes be undertaken: an urban mapping programme (1:1,000) which covers towns with a population 1,000 and over. These maps are now for the most part up-to-date and available in printed or digital form; a rural mapping programme (1:2,500) involving a full resurvey of rural Ireland. This is currently under way; a small scale mapping programme (1:50,000) aimed at the tourism industry and comprising 79 sheets. To date, nine sheets have been published with a further nine expected to be published at the end of this year.
