Vol. 433 No. 5

Written Answers. - Ballyglass (Mayo) Pier.

Enda Kenny

Question:

94 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for the Marine the proposals, if any, he has for the further development and expansion of facilities at Ballyglass Pier, Broadhaven, Ballina, County Mayo; if he has received a report from Mayo County Council regarding this; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Mayo County Council in their submission in respect of the Fishery Harbour Development Plan 1994-1999 have identified Ballyglass Pier as their No. 2 priority for development. Their proposal is to extend the pier by 30 metres at a cost of £250,000.

A new pier and approach road were completed at Ballyglass in 1977 at a cost of £408,291 towards which the Department provided an Exchequer grant of £237,603 and Mayo County Council contributed £170,687 which included a FEOGA grant of £68,615. In 1987 the Department contributed 75 per cent towards funding the installation of five working lights on the pier along with the provision of an electric crane.

Ballyglass Pier is being considered for possible inclusion in the Fishery Harbour Development Plan. However, pending finalisation of the plan and clarification of the funding to be made available under it, it is not possible to indicate at this stage whether further development work will be undertaken at this location but arising from the Deputy's ongong concerns in the matter he will be kept in constant touch with all future developments.
