Vol. 433 No. 6

Written Answers. - Sligo Inner Relief Route.

Edward Nealon

Question:

84 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Environment the present position as regards the Sligo City Relief Road; the present time schedule for work to begin on it; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Sligo Corporation were informed last April that in the absence of detailed information on alternative alignments, it would be inappropriate for me to certify their present proposals for the Sligo Inner Relief Route as being environmentally acceptable. The corporation were therefore requested, in co-operation with Sligo County Council, to arrange to have a new traffic study of the borough and its environs carried out. Within the context of the development plans of both authorities, and the current and expected land uses, the study would quantify the pattern and volume of traffic demands over the next 25 years, and identify the need, if any, for widening and-or new road facilities. I have recently approved the terms of reference for the study. Pending its completion, it would be premature to speculate about the timing of new road works.
