Vol. 433 No. 7

Written Answers. - Emergency Accident Kits Provision.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

24 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Health if he will issue emergency accident kits to general practitioners living in areas that are long distances from general hospitals; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

General practice units have recently been established at health board level to assist in the development of general practice. A function of this unit would be to consider the equipment needs of doctors as appropriate to their area of practice.

Under the general medical services scheme, doctors can avail of small supplies of drugs from the "doctor's bag". These supplies are provided to assist doctors in a situation where there would be a need to quickly treat and stabilise a patient. All doctors, particularly rural doctors, would of course carry minimum kits to deal with emergency situations.
