Vol. 433 No. 7

Written Answers. - Prostitute's Health Care.

Austin Deasy

Question:

40 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Health the measures, if any, that are being taken to register and medically examine prostitutes, both male and female, at regular intervals.

I presume that, when the Deputy refers to the question of registering prostitutes, he envisages it being done in a health context. I am not aware of any proposals to initiate such registration.

A service is provided for prostitutes by the Eastern Health Board at its centre in Baggot Street. A two-hour clinic is held each week at which STD screening and HIV testing and counselling are available. Condoms are also provided. Since prostitutes and their clients engage in activities which are regarded as being at risk the service is provided by the board as part of its strategy to prevent the spread of HIV-AIDS.
