Vol. 433 No. 7

Written Answers. - Dublin Live Register Statistics.

Ivor Callely

Question:

68 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the number and percentage of total unemployed on the live register in the Dublin area; the projected figure for December 1993; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

At end-May 1993, the latest date for which figures are available, there was a total of 93,865 persons on the Live Register in Dublin county. This total represented 22.6 per cent of the labour force in Dublin as estimated by the 1991 Labour Force Survey. Live register forecasts on a subnational level are not compiled in my Department and accordingly, an end-December 1993 Live Register figure for Dublin county is not available.

The unemployment rate in Dublin is slightly higher than the national average but increased by less than the national average in the 12 months to end-May last. There is already in place a very wide range of policies and specific measures at national and subnational level to assist employment growth and otherwise to deal with unemployment and others will come into effect over the rest of the year. These actions will have an increasing impact in all regions, including Dublin, into the future.
