Vol. 433 No. 7

Written Answers. - Re-employment of Widow in Civil Service.

Noel Ahern

Question:

72 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance the reason, if any, the Civil Service (Employment of Married Women) Act, 1973, is not being applied in respect of a widow who at the time of her marriage worked in the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, now the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications as the fact that Telecom Éireann has since been established is no reason to deprive this person of her rights.

Under the terms of the Civil Service (Employment of Married Women) Act, 1973, a woman seeking reinstatement must apply to the Department in which the post which she held before her resignation is currently situated. Where she was employed in the former Department of Posts and Telegraphs, she may apply to the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications only if the post which she held was one of the small number retained in the Civil Service when An Post and Telecom Éireann were established. Otherwise her application should be directed to An Post or Telecom Eireann, as appropriate. It is then a matter for An Post or Telecom Éireann, as the case may be, to deal with the application.
