Dermot Ahern

Question:

403 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Education her Department's position regarding the need for a new primary school to replace the existing building at Ballymackney National School, Killany, County Monaghan; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose taking Questions Nos. 39, 76, 97, 382 and 403 together.

Following reports from the County Medical Officer of Health and from a Department Inspector, in 1980 and in 1981 respectively, on the unsatisfactory condition of the existing Ballymackney school premises, a decision in principle was taken in 1981 to provide a new school on a new site at Killany.

The new school has not been provided to date due to the many other demands being made on the limited capital resources available.

The architectural planning for the new school building approved in this case has been completed and the tender documentation is in course of preparation. It will be considered for inclusion in the construction phase of the national schools' capital programme in due course in the light of available resources and other commitments and priorities.
