Vol. 434 No. 3

Written Answers. - Attacks on GAA Clubs.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

62 Mr. Deenihan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs his views on the recent increase of attacks and threats on GAA personnel and GAA playing grounds and club facilities in Northern Ireland; and the measures he intends to take to bring it to the attention of the authorities in Britain and Northern Ireland.

I totally condemn the recent attacks on, and threats against, GAA clubs, their members and supporters in Northern Ireland. The Government have raised these matters with the British authorities through the Anglo-Irish Secretariat and have emphasised to them the seriousness with which these incidents are viewed. In this regard we have drawn attention particularly to the dangers posed by the inaccurate and inflammatory character of comments about the GAA made by certain groups and individuals. It is important that all those in responsible positions exercise restraint and avoid statements which can only have the effect of putting lives and property at risk.
