Vol. 434 No. 3

Written Answers. - Departmental Review.

Question:

121 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for the Marine if he will make a statement on the issues involved arising from representations made by Deputy Byrne concerning the Lenajozina; if, in view of the reply to Parliamentary Question No. 64 of 2 June 1993, the review of the matters concerned was completed by mid-June 1993, as promised on that occasion; the reason he did not communicate directly with Deputy Byrne concerning Deputy Byrne's queries on the administrative history of the case; if he will do so now in the terms requested on 2 June 1993, with reference to the present time; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The case in question has major implications for sea fishing boat licensing policy and has required very careful consideration. For this reason the review of the matters concerned, which is still continuing, has taken longer than was originally anticipated.

On 30 July the Department wrote to the owner of the vessel requesting further particulars in respect of the case. To date no reply has been received to this letter. The Deputy, however, may rest assured that when the outstanding issues in the case have been resolved he will be advised of the outcome without delay.
As regards the queries on the administrative history of the case, this issue was dealt with in my written reply to the Deputy on 8 July 1993 and I regard that as the end of the matter.
