Vol. 434 No. 3

Written Answers. - THORP (Sellafield) Plant.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

128 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if, in view of his recent submission to the Second Consultative Process on Sellafield and his call for a public inquiry, the legal steps, if any, he may take in British or international courts if the British Government refuses his demand for an inquiry.

As the Deputy is aware I have made a second submission on behalf of the Government to the UK authorities in response to a Public Consultation being carried out by them on the proposed THORP Reprocessing plant at Sellafield.

In addition to detailing our opposition to the THORP plant on many grounds, I have again called on the UK authorities to hold a full, open and independent public inquiry to deal with all aspects of THORP. The UK Secretary of State for the Environment who has the discretion on the question of holding a hearing or inquiry will not take a final decision until he has considered all submissions.

I intend to ask the Attorney General what action, if any, may be possible if the situation arises.
