Vol. 434 No. 4

Written Answers. - Workplace Smoking Controls.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

172 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Health if he intends introducing legislation banning smoking in all places of work, thereby defending the right of workers to a clean and safe working environment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A voluntary code of practice on smoking in the workplace, drawn up by a consultative committee established by the Minister for Health, was circulated widely by the Health Promotion Unit in October 1992 to public and private sector organisations. I have now reconstituted the consultative committee to review the implementation of the voluntary code and to make recommendations to me on the next steps to take in relation to smoking controls in the workplace.
