Vol. 434 No. 4

Written Answers. - In-Vitro Fertilisation.

Ivor Callely

Question:

186 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health his views on whether the ban on in-vitro fertilisation for more married couples in Ireland should be lifted; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Invitro fertilisation is governed by guidelines issued by the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and approved by the Medical Council. Invitro fertilisation (IVF) is available at the Human Assisted Reproduction Unit at the Rotunda Hospital. This unit is a limited company separate from the hospital over which I have no direct control. I understand the practice at the unit has been to treat married couples only but that this is under review.
