Vol. 434 No. 4

Written Answers. - Funding of Courses.

Pat Cox

Question:

81 Mr. Cox asked the Minister for Finance the number of employees of State and semi-State companies, respectively, who are undertaking part-time degree/diploma courses wholly or partially at the expense of their respective employers; and the approximate cost to the State of this benefit.

I have direct responsibility for the implementation of post entry education schemes in the Civil Service only. In the Civil Service 1171 members of staff undertook part-time degree or diploma courses wholly or partially at the expense of their parent Government Departments during the most recent academic year. The total amount refunded or to be refunded in respect of the fees for those courses for the same academic year was approximately £800,000.
