Vol. 434 No. 4

Written Answers. - Customs and Excise Operations.

Seán Haughey

Question:

104 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Finance if the customs and excise branch of the Revenue Commissioners carried out operations in the vicinity of Beaumont Hospital, Dublin 9, recently; if so, if those activities interrupted or disrupted hospital activities; and if the operations were successful.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the operations to which the Deputy refers took place in the vicinity of Beaumont Hospital on 22 September, 1993 and consisted of checkpoints at Beaumont Road and Trim Road from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. It formed part of a special enforcement exercise to apprehend vehicles irregularly in the State, i.e. vehicles on which the vehicle registration tax had not been paid, which took place nationwide from 15 to 28 September, 1993.

During the operations at Beaumont 21 vehicles displaying foreign registration plates were stopped and the drivers interviewed. Of these 20 were allowed to proceed without further formality on the basis that the drivers had obtained or had applied for temporary exemption from vehicle registration tax authorisations. The driver of one vehicle was found to be a State resident and was warned against driving foreign registered vehicles in the State.

I am informed by the Commissioners that there was no evidence of interruption or disruption to the activities of the hospital nor were any complaints received.
The enforcement exercise by customs staff throughout the State has been successful and a significant number of vehicles on which vehicle registration tax had not been paid, has been detected.
