Vol. 434 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Juvenile Detention Centre.

Bernard Allen

Question:

14 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice if she plans to set up a juvenile detention centre in Cork city.

The comprehensive review of prisons strategy and requirements on which I am currently engaged involves an examination of the need for an expansion of custodial accommodation and also an expansion of the options for dealing with offenders — including, in particular, juvenile offenders — outside the prison environment. While this review has not been completed — and I have no wish to prejudice the outcome of the review — I can say that the establishment of a juvenile detention centre in Cork city is not one of the options which is likely to be recommended at this time.
