Vol. 434 No. 6

Written Answers. - Illegal Gaming Machines.

John Bruton

Question:

17 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice if she has any plans to introduce legislation to close the loop-hole in the law regarding the location of illegal gambling machines in public houses, whereby the ban can be evaded by arranging for the payment of winnings across the counter, rather than through the machine itself.

I have directed officials of the Department, in consultation with the Office of the Revenue Commissioners and the Garda authorities, to examine the alleged use of "poker" and similar machines for gaming purposes in premises which are not licensed under the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956, and to report to me. When I receive this report I will consider what, if any, action needs to be taken.
