Vol. 434 No. 6

Written Answers. - Mountjoy Prison.

Tony Gregory

Question:

88 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has for rebuilding within the perimeter of Mountjoy Prison, Dublin 7.

Two major building projects have just commenced in Mountjoy Prison. They are:

(i) the construction of a new kitchen, bakery and assembly hall. This development will upgrade the catering operation in the prison to the highest modern standards and will also provide much needed additional recreational facilities;

(ii) the refurbishment, including the provision of in-cell sanitation facilities, of a sector of the prison to provide accommodation for newly committed offenders. This development will alleviate a number of severe operational difficulties for the Governor and his staff, as well as providing much improved facilities for this category of offender.

Over the coming years it is intended to continue with a programme of phased refurbishment and to upgrade ancillary facilities and services.
