Vol. 434 No. 6

Written Answers. - Crime Levels.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

93 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice if recent crime statistics require a response in terms of extra gardaí and resources; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

While the Garda Commissioner's report on crime for 1992 shows an increase of 1 per cent in the level of crime on a nationwide basis, the Commissioner is satisfied that present manning levels and resources are adequate to meet the current demands of policing.

I will shortly be bringing forward a package of measures, designed to further enhance the capacity of the law and order system to deal with crime. In so far as the Garda area is concerned, my priority will be to maximise the number of gardaí available for outdoor operational duties through accelerated recruitment, increased civilianisation and the implementation of an information technology plan for the Force.
