Vol. 434 No. 6

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Willie Penrose

Question:

100 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Environment the number of water and sewerage schemes submitted by Westmeath County Council to his Department for funding; when he will sanction these schemes; if some of the Cohesion Funding will be used to expedite the commencement of these schemes; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Extensive work has been carried out recently or is being carried out at present in Westmeath on water and sewerage schemes in Athlone, Castle-pollard, Kinnegad and Mullingar.

Details of current water and sewerage scheme proposals from Westmeath County Council now with my Department are set out in the following table. The question of funding for these schemes and of submitting them for Cohesion or Structural Fund co-financing is being examined at present in the context of the Operational Programme for the period 1994-99.

Question:

101 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Environment if an application has been made by the Government for further Cohesion Funds from the EC to allow the large number of small sewerage schemes and water schemes awaiting sanction in his Department to proceed without further delay; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A total of 34 water and sewerage projects have been included in this year's submission to the EC Commission for assistance under the interim Cohesion Fund instrument. These are principally in respect of medium to large infrastructural projects. My Department is currently examining the possibility, in the context of future submissions, of applications based on packages of smaller water and sewerage schemes.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

102 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if work on the Kilcullen sewerage scheme, County Kildare, will commence before 15 January 1994; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Contract documents for the site investigation element of the Upper Liffey Valley Regional Sewerage — Kilcullen sewerage improvement scheme was approved in July, 1993. This scheme is at a relatively early stage of planning, and I cannot indicate the likely commencement date of the main works.

Question:

103 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if work on the Roberstown sewerage scheme, County Kildare will start before 1 January 1994; if not, if a date has been set; the reason for the delay; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I approved tenders for the Robertstown sewerage scheme on 15 July, 1993. I envisage that Kildare County Council will shortly finalise the relevant contracts and that substantial work on the scheme will proceed before the end of this year.
