Vol. 434 No. 9

Written Answers. - Tobacco Regulations.

Ivor Callely

Question:

199 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health the success of the implementation of the Tobacco (Health Promotion and Protection) Regulations, 1990; if he has satisfied himself with the enforcement of the regulations; if he intends to extend the regulations to include other areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Tobacco (Health Promotion and Protection) Regulations, 1990, which were introduced in May of that year, have been a success in that they have succeeded in creating a greater awareness of the necessity to restrict and prohibit tobacco consumption in a variety of public areas and facilities including; schools and colleges, theatres and cinemas, restaurants and canteens, kitchens, public offices, public transport and waiting areas. Enforcement, which is carried out by Environmental Health Officers, has been largely successful.

I have already announced my intention to review the regulations, which have already been reviewed once before by a consultative committee which recommended their extension to workplaces by means of a voluntary code.
