43 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Defence the incidence of regimental duties being performed by officers at lieutenant and captain rank in Border posts.

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

44 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Defence the incidence of regimental duties being performed by officers at lieutenant and captain rank in Border posts.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 42, 43 and 44 together.

There are three infantry battalions, a cavalry squadron and other supporting elements including bomb disposal teams and specialist search teams permanently located in the Border area.

The strength of these units is reviewed on an on-going basis and is adjusted as circumstances warrant. I am satisfied that members of the Permanent Defence Force who operate in the Border area have sufficient resources, both in terms of manpower and equipment, to undertake the various tasks allotted to them.

The incidence of 24 hour security duty performed by officers of lieutenant and captain rank in Border posts varies, depending on location, from once every three days to once every eight days.
