Vol. 434 No. 10

Written Answers. - Dunmore East (Waterford) Harbour.

Austin Deasy

Question:

63 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the necessity for a major extension to Dunmore East Harbour, County Waterford, to accommodate both commercial fishing and leisure craft; and if he intends to make moneys available for such an extension.

I am aware of the need to improve berthage facilities for all harbour users at Dunmore East fishery harbour centre. A long term solution will, however, involve major development works at a considerable cost. An ambitious development plan, presented to the Department by a locally formed development group in the area, is presently being assessed in the context of future development plans for the SouthEast region.

Dunmore East is a designated fishery harbour centre and it is primarily in this context that the need for future developments at the harbour are being examined. The Department of the Marine is currently working on the operational programme for the sea fisheries sector, as provided for under the National Development Plan 1994-1999. Pending consultation with the industry and finalisation of the programme I am not in a position to say what development works at Dunmore East will be sanctioned.
