Vol. 434 No. 10

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Treatment.

Paul Bradford

Question:

157 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Health his views on whether the guidelines issued by his Department concerning the provision of orthodontic treatment are restrictive to such extent that certain applicants for orthodontic assistance are not being offered treatment even though they may have serious dental problems; his views on whether a person (details supplied) in County Cork has faced such difficulties; and if he has any plans to amend the guidelines thus ensuring that all persons in need of orthodontic treatment will be provided with it.

Under guidelines issued by my Department to health boards for the provision of secondary care orthodontic treatment cases requiring treatment are assessed and categorised in accordance with the severity of the orthodontic condition.

The priority categories are for the most severe cases, such as where there is a severe functional handicap. Persons who do not have a functional handicap but who would, otherwise, have a definite treatment need are also listed for treatment.

I understand from the Southern Health Board that the person named by the Deputy has been assessed but the extent of her orthodontic condition does not bring her within these guidelines for treatment.
