Vol. 435 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin 5 School Hall.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

182 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Education when a school gym will be provided for the girls of St. John of God Secondary School, Kilmore Road, Dublin 5; and if she will ensure that, in the interim, St. John's sports activities, including an expensive rental of a community hall, will receive national lottery or other funding.

An application for grant aid towards the provision of a Sports Hall for St. John of God Secondary School, Kilmore Road, was received in 1983. However, because of the financial constraints which have existed for a number of years it has not yet been possible to make funding available for the provision of physical education facilities at the school in question. Due to demands on the capital resources available, priority has been given for some time to the provision of essential teaching spaces.

The provision of indoor sports accommodation in schools, in the form of a general purpose area at primary level and a hall at secondary level will resume as soon as pressure on available resources for urgent classroom accommodation has eased. In the meantime, additional emphasis is being placed on the adjacent siting and common use of school and community recreational facilities and schools should make maximum use of other sports facilities in their area.

There are no funds available to my Department from the proceeds of the national lottery under which consideration could be given to grant aid the cost of the rental of a community hall by the school.
