Vol. 435 No. 1

Written Answers. - Agriculture Research.

John Browne

Question:

26 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his views on the importance of research in agriculture.

I consider a properly focused research programme in agriculture to be of the utmost importance. Such a programme must take account of the major developments at international and EC level. In view of the ceilings now being placed on our principal agricultural commodities and concerns regarding the environment and food quality, the emphasis must be on low cost production systems, environmentally sustainable systems and improved food technology including the development of new added value products.
