Vol. 435 No. 1

Written Answers. - Driver-Tester Applicants.

Seán Haughey

Question:

81 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Finance his views on whether it is appropriate that applicants for a position of driver-tester with the Department of the Environment must be under 50 years of age, even though applicants over 50 may be more mature and have far more experience; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Previous competitions for appointment to the grade of Driver Tester were advertised with an upper age limit of 45. This limit has been increased to 50 for the current competition reflecting a commitment given by the Government in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress to raise recruitment age limits in the public service.

The application of age limits for open competitions is reviewed on an ongoing basis in the light of the experience of each competition.
