Question:

132 Mr. P. Gallagher (Laoighis-Offaly) asked the Minister for Education the amount of funding from the national lottery that has been made available in the past five years for the promotion of amateur boxing; the amount that has been used for clubhouse building and equipment; the amount that has been available to the IABA; the purposes of this allocation to the IAEA: the way in which this money is administered; the clubs that have benefited; and the amounts allocated to each club.

Under the annual scheme of grants for national sporting organisations a grant is paid annually to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association which is recognised as the national governing body for the sport of boxing for expenditure in the areas of administration, coaching, the purchase of special equipment, support for outstanding sportspersons, attendance at technical or executive meetings of the international federations and international competitions.

In 1992 a special grant scheme was introduced whereby following an application process grants were awarded to individual boxing clubs for the purchase of items of equipment. The level of grant was based on the membership of each club. Under this scheme which was implemented in co-operation with the Irish Amateur Boxing Association, grants totalling £181,025 have been awarded to 214 clubs. In addition, a grant of £18,500 was also paid to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association for the purchase of five computer scoreboards.

A capital grant of £100,000 was also provided in 1990 to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association for refurbishment works at the National Boxing Stadium and a grant of £30,000 was provided to Glen Boxing Club, Cork in 1989 for renovations to their clubhouse.

Details of the grant aid awarded to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association in the years 1989 to 1993 together with a list of the boxing clubs which received equipment grants, is being circulated in the Official Report.
