Vol. 435 No. 3

Written Answers. - Adoption Procedures.

Alan Shatter

Question:

109 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health whether arrangements have yet been entered into with the Romanian central authority which will enable the adoption by Irish couples of Romanian children under Romanian law; and if such arrangements have not been entered into, when it is anticipated they will be.

As I indicated in my reply to a previous question from the Deputy on 3 June last, my Department received a revised draft agreement from the Romanian Committee for Adoptions earlier this year setting out proposed procedures for the adoption of Romanian children by Irish residents. Following a detailed examination of that draft, an amended text was sent to the Romanian committee for consideration on 18 June. A reminder was sent in September and a response is still awaited. On receipt of confirmation from the Romanian committee that the amended text is acceptable to it, I intend to bring the proposed agreement before this House for approval.
